How to Save on Pet Supplies
Having a pet at home could be expensive. You may have adopted a puppy for free but you have to give it food, shelter and vaccination. You will be required to bring the dog to the vet from time to time for their check up and if you just don’t have the time, bring your pet to an animal grooming center in your city so that they would be clean once again. The damage they could also do to your property such as your electronic gadgets, appliances and the carpet should also be considered.
But it doesn’t have to be expensive. There are things that you can do to ensure that you don’t end up spending thousands of dollars in a dog’s lifetime.
Starting Out Small
Savings on pets should start when they are small. This is especially applicable on the type of food that you will give to your pet. If you give your pet branded food since they are young, they will eventually demand that type of food until they die. That is why; do not bring home those highly expensive pet foods. Settle for store brand items and save a good amount of money in the long run.
A young pet is also a good chance for you as the owner the properly train your pet to behave well. You should train your dog where to urinate, leave their feces and other proper behavior they should be observing. At this point quality training for your dog is essential. You might have to spend a few extra hundred dollars for training. However, think about the hundreds of dollars that you could be spending each month just because your dog urinated in your carpet or charged you when you get home – knocking everything and possibly everyone in its path.
Coupons, Coupons, Coupons
One of the basic tricks in saving money on pet supplies is with the use of coupons. This could be tiring but every cent worth of coupon is a cent worth of savings. There are hundreds of coupons that you can find in weekend newspapers which could provide you discounts on pet supplies. Have a small notebook or envelope where you can tag and use your coupon in the future.
Remember that coupons are usually for supermarkets. Pet shops might consider your coupon but what they usually sell is branded food and other supplies. That means you are not really saving well as there are cheaper alternatives in the supermarket.
DIY on Certain Items
When it comes to toys, beds, sheets and other products for your pets, it’s always recommended to improvise. Look for ideas on popular pet magazines or online wherein you can copy their ideas and make a toy that will be enjoyed by your pet. Luckily, pets are not that demanding – they really don’t want those high end products that you see in the store, they just want something interesting for them. It doesn’t matter if you have spent $100 or $1 on that item.
